Choose Makita XFD15, XFD16 or XPH16: space, wood bits or hammer drilling

Check XFD15 for confined small-hole work, XFD16 for a known larger self-feed or screw requirement, and XPH16 for identified masonry work suited to hammer drilling.

More guides for this brand

Choose a specific model, control or documentation question.

  • Makita battery families

Sub-compact XFD15 still uses LXT, not CXT. Tool-to-battery compatibility and battery-to-charger compatibility are two separate checks.

  • Find manuals and parts

Use the tool’s XFD or XPH identity and retain the document code. A parts drawing is not an operating procedure or proof of interchangeable parts.

  • XFD15 access planning

Verify drilling and screwdriving separately: use drilling mode for the pilot and a low setting within 1–20 for the screw. Stop and remove the battery between accessory changes.

  • XFD15 versus XFD16

Start with XFD15 for confined installation work within its capacities. XFD16 has a larger specified self-feed and wood-screw range. Neither has hammer-drill mode.

  • XFD16 speed and clutch

Stop before fully selecting displayed 1 or 2. For screws, align one of 1–21 with the body arrow and trial low on matching scrap; numbers are not torque units.

  • XFD16 versus XPH16

For appropriate wood, metal and screw work, compare XFD16 configuration and price first. Consider XPH16 when an identified masonry task and accessory justify hammer action.

  • XPH16 mode choice

One XPH16 adjusting ring selects numbered clutch, rotary drilling or hammer drilling. Align the selected mark with the body arrow while stopped and isolated, never between marks.

  • Makita package codes

XFD15ZB, XFD16Z and XPH16Z exclude batteries and charger. SY1B and T identify specific kits whose actual models and quantities need checking.

Makita discs or belts: different consumable checks

Match the complete abrasive and grip arrangement to the work. These specifications do not measure removal, fatigue or final finish.

  1. Round sanding pad
  2. Rectangular sanding pad
  3. Pointed sanding pad
  4. Continuous abrasive belt
  • BO5041Random-orbit sander

    • Use five-inch eight-hole hook-and-loop discs; the listed 4⅞-inch pad is a separate dimension.
    • Adjustable 4,000–12,000 OPM does not identify the best setting without the task and instructions.
    • Switch off, wait for a complete stop and unplug before repositioning the front grip.
  • 9403Belt sander

    • Select the full 4 × 24-inch belt specification, not width alone or the shared manual’s 9921 row.
    • Belt speed is 1,640 ft/min; linear travel is not comparable numerically with OPM.
    • Install only while unplugged and match actual belt/tool direction arrows; tracking is a separate exact procedure.

Random-orbit sander

BO5041

BO5041 combines variable orbital speed with an adjustable front handle. US product specifications and the region-sensitive linked manual are recorded separately.

Belt sander

9403

The 9403 is a continuous-belt sander. Its abrasive dimensions and belt surface speed cannot be compared directly with a round sander’s OPM.

Makita BO5041 or 9403: refinement, removal and working space

These are not simply light and heavy substitutes. BO5041 organizes work around disc refinement and variable speed; 9403 around continuous-belt removal. Identify the needed stage first.

More guides for this brand

Choose a specific model, control or documentation question.

  • No-load OPM is not a sanding-speed or stock-removal ranking

No-load OPM describes a motion-frequency range, not how long a board takes to finish. Separate removal, elapsed time and the final surface to see what a comparison actually demonstrates.

  • Choose the right sander type

Choose a sander for tabletops, cabinet corners or thin veneer, with practical differences in reach, abrasives and dust collection.

  • Read sander speed correctly

12,000 OPM and 1,640 ft/min cannot share a meaningful bigger-is-faster ranking. Identify the motion before using the number to choose a tool.

  • Check abrasive fit

Diameter alone is not enough. Format, attachment, specified abrasive size, extraction openings and exact tool identity belong on the same shopping list.

  • Controlled edges and corners

A bare-solid-wood shelf example separates supported machine work from block finishing and distinguishes a preserved square edge from deliberate easing.

  • Belt tracking boundaries

Check belt installation before correcting its travel. Fitting is done unplugged; tracking requires observing a running belt. They are different operations.

  • Adjust the BO5041 front grip

Identify the grip, split base and threaded fixing, then adjust its position and check the full tool path before use.

  • BO5041 speed and switch

Separate the speed dial, trigger and lock button, release a locked switch correctly, and run a controlled sanding trial on matching material.

  • Check BO5041 manual region

Check the nameplate, supply requirements and fitted pad separately. The US configuration uses a five-inch eight-hole hook-and-loop disc; that does not establish every replacement pad or regional electrical rating.

  • Select the 9403 belt

Select by both dimensions, then material, condition and direction. A four-inch label alone is not enough.

  • 9403 clamps and cord path

Check the full envelope of clamps, bag, cord and both hands on a wide board before using the 9403 contact sequence.

  • Choose the removal stage

Coarse preparation of a known solid-wood panel is not the same task as removing the previous grit scratches. Define removal and geometry first; not every job needs belt sanding before a disc.

  • Belt-sander cross-grain scratches

Identify grain and scratch direction on visible solid wood, establish a with-grain sample and do not import floor-drum sanding angles.

  • Prevent unintended belt-sanded roundovers

Record original geometry and fit, plan fully supported travel and compare against the original edge after stopping.

  • Handheld-use boundary

Clamping the tool frees your hands but changes work support, abrasive exposure and stopping control at once. A lock-on switch does not supply those missing conditions.

  • Raised-joint decisions

A raised seam does not automatically mean the higher board needs sanding thinner. Sidelight and a straightedge help separate dried glue from a genuine step before you create a hollow.

  • Rebates and narrow spaces

Establish opening, floor and shoulder references, rehearse the complete isolated tool path, and preserve fit with separate hand-block faces.
