Round and rectangular access at a straight boundary
Top-view shapes show geometry only, not housing clearance or permission to touch an obstruction. GSS20-40 startup requirements still need clarification.
1. Round disc
A circular pad leaves the square corner apex beyond its reach.
2. Rectangular sheet
Straight sides can approach straight boundaries, subject to actual machine and clamp clearance.

Narrow the choice with three tasks
For open tabletops and cabinet doors, existing suitable five-inch hook-and-loop discs and a need for variable speed, start with ROS20VSC. Its related body instructions identify ROS20VS. That system suits organizing scratch refinement and surface preparation around discs, but does not prevent every swirl or sand-through.
For working beside vertical boundaries or using quarter-sheet clamped paper, include GSS20-40. It is designed for flush work at the front, left and right sides. Its rectangular geometry follows straight boundaries more closely, without solving every deep groove, narrow moulding or inside corner.
For unknown old paint, uncertain veneer allowance, major warping or loose construction, address material and preparation first. Neither is a shortcut around hazardous-material assessment or accurate flattening. A finishing label is not permission to sand thin layers without assessment.

| Dimension | ROS20VSC / ROS20VS | GSS20-40 |
|---|---|---|
| System | Five-inch random orbit with standard hook-and-loop discs | Quarter-sheet orbital finishing, front/rear clamps and separately specified PSA option |
| Speed choice | Adjustable 7,500–12,000 OPM | 12,000 OPM; use the model’s non-variable configuration |
| Surface and boundary | Open-surface refinement; round disc cannot reach a square inside-corner apex | Flush work on three sides, subject to housing and clamp clearance |
| Selected US listed weight | 3.5 lb | 2.7 lb |
| 1¼- or 1½-inch hose adapter route | Applicable VAC002 or VAC024 route | VAC024; incompatible with VAC002 |
| Extra purchase check | Confirm replacement-pad hardness where current RS033/RS034 descriptions differ from the old table | Clarify exact applicable start/stop requirements with Bosch |
Listed weights are product-page values, not handling tests with all hoses and accessories. The lower GSS figure is a carrying comparison clue, not proof of lower fatigue in every position. Grip, cord and hose pull also matter. Both reaching 12,000 OPM does not prove equal removal or finish.
Check whether existing abrasives fit before calling them cheaper
Existing five-inch discs still need correct attachment, hole alignment and material suitability. Same diameter does not permit PSA on a hook-and-loop pad; matching hole count does not establish alignment. Unsuitable stock should not drive the purchase.
Clamped sheets can come from appropriately sized and suitable full sheets, with the GSS20-40 supplied punchplate for its required openings. Include usable cutting yield, punching and fitting time in costs rather than comparing a whole-sheet price directly with a disc. PSA is a separately specified route, not permission to glue arbitrary paper.
For a practical quote, select comparable suitable abrasive materials, full grade designations and quality. Record package price, usable pieces and necessary adapter costs. Separate purchase cost per piece from actual consumption per workpiece; packaging alone cannot establish service-life superiority without comparable use.
An existing vacuum does not mean the system is complete
Record the exact hose-end specification and adapter model. A VAC002 owner cannot transfer it to GSS20-40; that model specifies VAC024. The ROS20VS route permits VAC002 or VAC024 where applicable, still requiring the actual hose and connection to match.
Budget machine, suitable abrasives, correct adapter and any necessary extraction equipment and filters. A canister or adapter does not prove the extractor suits every dust or replace work-environment and material controls.
On stable equipment safe to approach, with power off, motion stopped and plug disconnected, inspect grip space and hose layout. Do not power-test unknown accessories, open the housing or compare extraction using hazardous dust.
GSS20-40 has a use prerequisite to resolve
Its 2610051953, 08/18 manual’s printed pages 10 and 11 conflict over whether the pad contacts the work at startup. Do not arbitrarily select one or repeatedly start on cheap scrap to compare. Ask Bosch for the exact body’s applicable requirements before purchase. Until clarified, restrict activity to safe disconnected identity/configuration checks, not powered sanding trials.
This does not prevent comparing sheet systems, shape and accessory costs, but affects immediate usability. If you need a tool ready for use under clear instructions, make applicable clarified instructions a purchase condition rather than hiding the issue outside a performance table.
Decide with two buyer task lists
Buyer one mainly works cabinet doors and tabletops, has suitable discs and a matching extraction route, and wants variable speed. ROS20VSC better matches those conditions. Settings still depend on work, abrasive and instructions; selecting the machine does not prescribe maximum speed.
Buyer two mainly works flat areas along internal cabinet boundaries, has suitable sheet supply and accepts correct cutting, punching and clamping. GSS20-40’s geometry and paper route merit consideration, after confirming VAC024 and resolving startup requirements. If allowance is too thin or even the housing cannot enter a corner, use an appropriate manual or other established method instead of forcing a choice between these machines.
Write down primary work, confirmed abrasives, missing extraction items and full cost. That supports a conditional choice without inventing one machine as universally faster, longer-lasting or cheaper.

ROS20VSRandom-orbit sander
- Five-inch hook-and-loop discs; confirm actual hole alignment.
- Variable 7,500–12,000 OPM is a setting range, not a finish-quality ranking.
- For applicable 1¼- or 1½-inch hoses, confirm the VAC002 or VAC024 connection.
GSS20-40Quarter-sheet orbital finishing sander
- Use the correct clamped-sheet or specified PSA route; they are not interchangeable fitting steps.
- The model uses 12,000 OPM without a user variable-speed dial; do not equate OPM with pad rotation.
- For the listed 1¼- or 1½-inch hose route use VAC024, not VAC002.
