Establish safe approach before reading labels
Do not approach, touch or remove a smoking, leaking or persistently abnormally hot pack to identify it. Keep away and seek local emergency guidance. Only inspect stable, safely approachable equipment after the tool has fully stopped and power is disconnected; never open a battery pack.
MultiVolt can describe the manufacturer’s tool system while an individual tool remains 18V. A dual-voltage battery is specifically marked 18V/36V. DS18DDX, DS18DEX and DV18DEX are all 18V drills; installing a dual-voltage pack does not run them at 36V.

The older DDX manual lists BSL1815, not every later pack. Omission is not proof that all new packs are incompatible. Conversely, a specific 18V slide-platform statement is not permission for every old Metabo or every 18V product.
Two Ah values do not create extra stored energy
BSL36A18 is rated 5Ah on an appropriate 18V tool and 2.5Ah at 36V. BSL36B18 is 8Ah and 4Ah respectively. The changing Ah value does not mean energy doubles. Runtime comparisons require the same tool, load and battery condition.
Published pack weights are about 1.5 lb for A18 and 2.1 lb for B18. More capacity changes total weight and the base envelope; cabinet work and brief small holes may not justify a large pack throughout. Consider a suitable smaller pack or rotation before simply buying the largest Ah number.
The charger connection has real model choices
Current UC18YKSL product information supports Metabo HPT 18V and 18V/36V MultiVolt slide lithium-ion packs; UC18YSL3 supports the relevant family too. BSL36B18 battery and starter-kit information explicitly pairs it with UC18YSL3. Its approximately 52-minute charge is a manufacturer estimate, affected by conditions, not a guaranteed countdown.
A complete example is DS18DEX → BSL36B18 (372121M) → UC18YSL3. The tool accessory list establishes the first connection and battery/charger information the second. Completing only the first does not authorize an unknown charger.
Existing UC18YKSL owners need not automatically replace it. Check current compatibility and actual labels before deciding whether faster charging is useful. Do not apply an old 1.5Ah charging time to an 8Ah pack. Check US charger 120V input and the required frequency separately; a plug adapter is not a supply conversion.
Make four checks before purchase
- Record the tool model and confirm the 18V slide family, not another system.
- Record full battery model and part number. Distinguish BSL36A18 from BSL36A18X rather than dropping letters from a quote.
- Record charger model and input, checking both compatibility connections.
- Keep the battery removed and tool off while assessing space from the planned pack dimensions, total cost and spare arrangement.
If identity remains unclear, obtain accurate manufacturer or seller information. Do not force latches, alter contacts or use unidentified cross-platform adapters. MultiVolt AC-adapter marketing also does not authorize fitting one to these 18V drills; that needs explicit tool-specific permission.
