Compare head length before adding the bit

Proportional head-length bars with dashed bit extensions face an obstruction.

Compare all three on the same terms

These are US DCD794, DCD800 and DCD805 models. 20V MAX describes maximum initial battery voltage; nominal voltage is 18V. That does not make another brand’s 18V battery compatible. Match the exact approved battery and charger.

All have variable triggers, reverse, two mechanical gears and driving clutch controls. Chuck size describes the shank, not drilling capacity in every material. No-load rpm is not hole completion time. Use the table for functional and dimensional screening, not an untested ranking of runtime, comfort or durability.

Inside furniture, reject setups that do not fit

Pilot holes for drawer slides, hinges and narrow compartments often face clearance limits first. DCD794 is approximately 12.4 mm shorter than DCD800 and 28.4 mm shorter than DCD805, but these are head dimensions. Measure along the hole axis, then include projecting bit, selected battery and hand space.

With power disconnected, check alignment, secure grip and withdrawal. If DCD794 allows straight drilling while the others hit a partition, the size advantage is concrete. If all require badly angled drilling, change the assembly sequence or choose a suitable compact arrangement. The shortest head is not automatically usable, and the accessory must still suit the material and tool capacity.

On an open bench, lighting may matter more

With adequate space, investigate DCD800’s adjustable light. Changing its position may reduce shadows cast by a clamp or workpiece edge. DCD800 and DCD805 share three-position, three-mode lighting, including an approximately 20-minute timed spotlight. Without a hammer task, that shared light is not a reason to choose the longer DCD805.

Brightness and rpm do not replace setup. Large accessories need their specified speed rather than maximum speed by default. For screws, start with a low clutch setting on matching scrap and increase until correctly seated. Clutch numbers are not calibrated tightening torque and cannot replace a tool required for a specified torque connection.

Consider DCD805 for an identified masonry task

DCD805 adds hammer drilling. Establish material, diameter, depth, fixing requirements and workload before deciding it is appropriate. “A few holes in a wall” is incomplete: finishes, hollow blocks and solid masonry do not share one setting. Identify hidden services and the space behind the surface before making holes.

Where tool, material and accessory match, DCD805 offers a function the other two lack. Frequent concrete work, large holes or SDS-shank accessories call for evaluating a suitable rotary hammer or other appropriate tool, not assuming any hammer drill is enough. A hammer drill is also different from an impact driver that delivers rotational impacts.

Without a hammer task, ordinary drilling mode does not automatically make DCD805 better value. It is 0.63 inch, approximately 16 mm, longer than DCD800. Its added function needs to solve a real requirement before trading away space or paying more.

Price the complete package

Existing owners of approved batteries and charger should compare bare tools plus genuinely missing equipment. First-time buyers need power included: DCD794D1 has one DCB203 2 Ah and DCB107; DCD800D2 and DCD805D2 have two DCB203 2 Ah, DCB112 and bag. All three list a hook. The manufacturer’s 794D1 contents do not list a bag; confirm store gifts separately.

Two batteries allow rotation, not a different-capacity tool or guaranteed uninterrupted work. Verify charger input against local power; changing a plug alone does not establish suitability. Put battery models/counts, charger, accessories, taxes and delivery on one quote sheet so a bare-tool price is not compared with a complete kit.

Decide in this order: whether a suitable hammer mode is needed, whether the complete tool can be controlled at the actual hole, and whether you already own matching power equipment. Series names and headline figures then become much less distracting.
